The permissive car park in Debdale Spinney sits a few minutes from the door, and from it a single path runs west into the Ernest Cook Trust’s Dalby Hills woods, joins the Leicestershire Round, and carries on to the Iron Age ramparts of Burrough Hill. Pick a length — all three start and finish at the same gate.
Before you set off
Debdale Spinney and the path west are open by the kindness of the Ernest Cook Trust, who have welcomed walkers onto the Little Dalby estate since 1974. Please keep to the marked route, take litter home, and close gates behind you.
Sheep and cattle graze the hillfort and the fields either side of the Leicestershire Round. Dogs are welcome on a lead. There are cattle grids and kissing gates rather than stiles on most of the route.
The woodland ride and the clay fields between Somerby and Dalby Hills hold water from autumn through to late spring. Boots rather than trainers for anything past the woods.
Only the longer circular passes a pub. The Stilton Cheese Inn and the village shop in Somerby fall a little past the halfway point — check opening times before you rely on them, and carry water on the two shorter walks.
